Russia, Ukraine Exchange Strike Accusations as Overnight Attacks Kill Two

(MENAFN) At least two people were killed as Russia and Ukraine exchanged accusations over a new wave of overnight drone and air attacks targeting locations on both sides.

The Russian-installed administration at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant said Tuesday evening that a Ukrainian drone struck a moving “civilian vehicle,” killing two people.

“One of those killed was an employee of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This is the third plant employee to be killed in the last two weeks, and the 13th since April of this year,” the statement said.

The administration described the incident as "deliberate terrorism" and extended its condolences to the victims’ families and relatives.

Separately, Murat Kumbilov, head of Russia’s Republic of Adygea, reported that a drone attack triggered a fire at a logistics facility operated by online retailer Ozon in the town of Adygeysk.

Kumbilov said there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries. He added that falling drone debris damaged a gas pipeline and shattered windows at a private home in the nearby settlement of Petrov.

Ozon confirmed that its Adygeysk facility had been attacked, saying all employees were promptly evacuated after a fire broke out at the site.

Ukraine has expanded its drone campaign against Russian logistics infrastructure since July, with attacks reported across several regions. Ukrainian drones have targeted facilities operated by Wildberries, Russia’s largest e-commerce retailer, since July, while Ozon sites have also come under attack since August.

Kyiv has accused both companies of contributing to Russia’s military supply network. Moscow and the retailers, however, maintain that their facilities serve commercial purposes.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems intercepted 709 Ukrainian drones across 14 regions, as well as over the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.

The ministry also said Russian forces continued targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure and maritime assets. It reported strikes against electrical substations in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions and an attack on a dry-cargo vessel allegedly “carrying military supplies” around 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of the coastal city of Odesa.

In the Ukrainian capital, local authorities reported that drone debris fell in an open area near a private residence in the Desnianskyi district. “Information regarding damage and casualties is being clarified,” they said.

Dnipropetrovsk Gov. Oleksandr Hanzha reported that a Russian drone strike hit an industrial facility in the regional capital, injuring two people. Both were taken to hospital, where they were reported to be in moderate condition.

Meanwhile, Ternopil Gov. Taras Pastukh said a drone attack damaged an energy infrastructure facility in the region’s Ternopil district. Emergency and relevant response services were dispatched to the site.

Ukraine’s Air Force, for its part, claimed that its air defenses shot down 272 of the 310 drones Russia launched overnight.

The claims made by both sides could not be independently verified amid the continuing war.
