Russia Says Europe Remains Unwilling to Discuss Security Interests Honestly

(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that European countries remain unwilling to hold an “honest discussion” about Moscow’s security interests, accusing European institutions of making demands that do not reflect reality.

Speaking at a press briefing, ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said European institutional leaders continue to present demands to Russia that are “entirely detached from reality.”

“As for European security, our Western neighbors still perceive its essence – or so they believe – as the continued flooding of the Kyiv regime with weapons and open preparation for a direct confrontation with our country in the coming years,” Zakharova said.

She argued that Moscow had observed no change in the position of most European Union politicians on the issue. Zakharova also pointed to the bloc’s updated Arctic strategy, published on Oct. 20, as evidence that Brussels intends to “continue pursuing active military development” in the region.

Describing the revised strategy as “lacking both originality and fresh thinking,” she added: “In effect, this cements the EU’s politicized approach to the high latitudes – a region that Brussels now views primarily through the lens of escalation and, as stated, the containment of Russia.”

Addressing the conflict in Ukraine, Zakharova accused Kyiv of attempting to undermine diplomatic efforts by Moscow and Washington to restart consultations on a settlement to the war, which has lasted more than four years. She also accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of being “literally obsessed” with prolonging the conflict.

Zakharova further announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting scheduled to take place in Atlanta, Georgia, on Oct. 30-31.

She said most logistical arrangements for the Russian delegation’s attendance had been finalized, despite the preparations being completed shortly before departure.

“I should mention, however, that given that the departure is scheduled for within the next 24 hours, most issues were successfully resolved at the last minute. So the delegation has been formed, all formalities are complete, and it is ready to get to work,” she said.
