Russian Strike Kills 6 in Kharkiv Park; Zelenskyy Demands Sanctions

(MENAFN) Russian strikes in the Kharkiv region killed six people and wounded 14 more, among them children, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday.

A Shahed drone hit civilians “directly” in a park beside a cafe, he said, branding the assault “pure atrocity.”

Among the dead was an infant. Zelenskyy detailed her death in a post on the US social media platform X: “A little girl was killed in a stroller -- her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025 … Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… ”

Zelenskyy pressed Washington to hold firm and enforce the sanctions bill sponsored by Lindsey O. Graham against Russia, and urged Europe to keep backing Kyiv.

“You can’t think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue,” he said, stressing that “Ukraine wants peace.”

His appeal follows a move last week by US President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order that bypasses the sanctions in the law.

Energy grid hit, supply delays flagged
In a later post, Zelenskyy said Russian strikes damaged 28 substations and other critical energy facilities. Repair crews are working to restore them.

He also reported delays in some “vital supplies” from the US Defense Department.

Equipment running on Starlink and Starshield services, he added, was cutting out at speeds between 130 and 161 kilometers per hour (81 to 100 miles per hour) in several sectors along the front. The failures are slowing frontline logistics and restricting the use of multiple drone types, notably mid-strike drones and interceptors aimed at jet-powered Shahed drones.

“This must be raised again with our partners at every level today -- speed matters when it comes to protecting lives,” he said, thanking those assisting Ukraine.

Talks with US defense contractor
Zelenskyy also said he met in Kyiv with representatives of US defense contractor Lockheed Martin to discuss increasing deliveries of Patriot air defense systems and F-16 fighter jets.

Both systems are central to Ukraine’s defense against Russian ballistic missiles and jet-powered Shahed drones, he said, acknowledging that “things are not easy with either right now.”

The company is ramping up output of ballistic missile interceptors, Zelenskyy said, and Ukraine hopes to buy some to bolster its defenses. Kyiv is also working to make sure F-16 maintenance and repairs can be done inside Ukraine.
