Russia Expands Sanctions List Targeting EU Officials Over Ukraine Support

(MENAFN) Moscow has broadened its sanctions against European officials in response to the European Union’s latest package of measures against Russia, according to statements from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The ministry said in a declaration on Monday that the EU’s recent sanctions, adopted last week as part of its 20th package, represent actions that “grossly violate international law.”

In retaliation, Russia announced an expanded blacklist that now includes additional representatives of EU institutions, officials from member states, and figures from other European countries that align with Brussels’ policy toward Moscow.

While no specific names or nationalities were disclosed, the ministry said the targeted individuals include those involved in decisions related to military assistance for Ukraine, the implementation of sanctions against Russia, legal proceedings against Russian citizens, and efforts that allegedly damage Russia’s diplomatic relations with other countries. It also stated that certain activists and academics deemed “hostile” are included in the list.

Moscow emphasized that its foreign policy remains unchanged despite the measures, stating that it will continue to defend its national interests.

The move follows the EU’s announcement of further restrictions aimed at Russia’s financial sector and energy exports, including measures targeting what Brussels describes as a “shadow fleet” used to circumvent sanctions on Russian oil shipments.

Russian officials have rejected the existence of such a fleet and have criticized the seizure of vessels by Western countries, describing such actions as unlawful.

The Kremlin has acknowledged that sanctions have had a negative effect on the Russian economy, but maintains that the country has developed strategies to mitigate their impact over time.
