Moscow Warns of Rising “Historical Revanchism” in West
In comments made in an interview with TASS on Sunday, Zakharova spoke on the occasion of Russia’s newly observed Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People. She said that Russia once viewed World War II as a universally respected historical subject, but argued that attitudes in parts of the West have shifted over time.
She stated that some countries now treat the Soviet victory in World War II as something “accidental and inadmissible,” and suggested that there are efforts to reinterpret or “correct” that historical outcome based on this view.
Zakharova also said that what Russia previously considered a minor ideological issue had expanded over time. She compared it to something that begins as a “small germ” but can develop into a much larger phenomenon, which she described as a “huge, terrifying pandemic of historical revanchism.”
She further referenced the 1965 Soviet-era film Ordinary Fascism by Mikhail Romm, saying it serves as a warning about the emergence and consequences of Nazi ideology and its historical crimes.
