Russian Billionaire Files Human Rights Case Over Jersey Financial Probe

(MENAFN) Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has filed a case with the European Court of Human Rights, challenging a long-running investigation into his financial activities conducted by authorities in Jersey, according to reports.

His legal team argues that the probe has violated his fundamental rights, claiming it is linked to allegations involving corruption and money laundering and has been handled in what they describe as an “unfair and abusive” manner.

A significant portion of Abramovich’s assets—estimated at around £5.3 billion ($7.15 billion)—remains frozen in Jersey, a self-governing British Crown Dependency with its own legal and financial framework.

In the complaint, his lawyers state that the investigation breaches his rights to a fair trial and privacy as protected under the European Convention on Human Rights.

They also refer to a public disclosure made by Jersey authorities in 2022 regarding the investigation, despite no formal charges having been filed.

Representatives for Abramovich said the inquiry has continued for several years without “charges, transparency or credible evidence,” accusing officials of withholding information and suggesting the process may be politically motivated. They expressed confidence that the court will ultimately side with their position.
