Russia, China Rebut Nuclear Test Violation Claims

(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov firmly rejected U.S. allegations Wednesday that Moscow and Beijing have breached the longstanding moratorium on explosive nuclear testing, insisting both nations remain fully committed to the decades-old agreement.

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Peskov dismissed Washington's accusations against both countries as unfounded.

"But that is not true. Neither the Chinese nor the Russians have violated it. We heard statements from Beijing, and it resolutely rejects such accusations and remains committed to the moratorium," he stressed.

The spokesman further acknowledged that while Russia seeks greater economic cooperation with the United States, existing U.S. sanctions continue to obstruct any meaningful progress toward normalized trade relations.

"The sanctions, which we, of course, consider illegal, hinder the establishment of trade and economic interaction between Russia and the US. We are interested in developing it," Peskov said. "Potentially, there could be many projects on the agenda, but to achieve this, we need to revive our relations."

On the question of whether Moscow had engaged Washington over its fuel blockade against Cuba, Peskov offered a firm denial before pivoting to Russia's bilateral ties with Havana.

"We have bilateral Russian-Cuban relations; they are very important to us, and we are developing them in every possible way," he said.

Peskov separately confirmed that the prospect of Russian assistance to Cuba was among the topics addressed during an earlier meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.

Cuba's energy crisis has deepened sharply after Washington halted oil flows from Mexico and Venezuela to the island nation — moves that coincided with the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro — effectively imposing a sweeping fuel embargo. The U.S. has since warned that countries supplying Cuba with fuel face proportional import tariffs.

In a significant development last week, the Russian Embassy in Havana announced that Moscow would shortly begin delivering oil and petroleum products to Cuba under a humanitarian aid framework.
