Russia declares Armenian PM confirmed intention to proceed working with EAEU
(MENAFN) Russia announced on Thursday that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed his country’s intention to maintain its cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) during a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk told reporters that Armenia remains committed to working within the EAEU, a point discussed at the meeting held in Manzherok, in Russia’s Altai Republic, on the sidelines of an international environmental conference.
In recent years, Armenia has also pursued closer relations with the European Union. In March, the Armenian parliament approved a bill to start the EU accession process, which was signed into law by President Vahagn Khachaturyan in April. Russia views Armenia’s EU talks as a potential sign of withdrawing from the EAEU, which Armenia joined in 2015.
Overchuk added that the leaders addressed other regional issues in the South Caucasus, describing the discussions as “very useful.” Concerns over declining trade between Russia and Armenia were raised, with talks focusing on measures to improve economic ties. The discussion also included Russian investment in Armenia.
