Russia denounces US backed attacks on Iran
"The Russian side reaffirmed its condemnation of the unprovoked military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian territory, carried out in violation of the UN Charter and international law, including the bombing of the country’s nuclear energy infrastructure facilities under IAEA guarantees," the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
Lavrov reiterated Moscow's willingness to assist Iran in pursuing “mutually acceptable solutions, including within the framework of specific initiatives previously proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
The current hostilities between Israel and Iran began on June 13 when Israel launched a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian military, civilian, and nuclear sites. The Iranian Health Ministry reported that at least 935 people were killed and 5,332 others injured in those attacks.
In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes, which led to at least 29 deaths and over 3,400 injuries, according to figures from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A ceasefire brokered by the United States came into effect on June 24, putting a temporary end to the conflict.
Lavrov also held separate discussions with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on the sidelines of the summit. In his meeting with Vieira, both sides addressed international developments and coordinated future diplomatic engagements between Russia and Brazil. They also reviewed their collaboration in multilateral forums, particularly in preparation for the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
