Russia Emphasizes BRICS Is Not Against Any Nation
This declaration came as U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning about possible new tariffs on countries that support the economic group.
As the BRICS summit commenced in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, Trump cautioned that any nation siding "with the anti-American policies” of the bloc would incur a fresh 10 percent tariff.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, he stressed that “there will be no exceptions to this policy.”
Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov, during a media briefing, acknowledged Trump's remarks and offered Russia’s stance on the issue.
Addressing the question, Peskov described BRICS as a coalition of nations united by “common approaches and a common worldview of how to cooperate based on their own interests.”
He emphasized that “this interaction within BRICS has never been and will never be directed against third countries.”
The 17th BRICS summit, lasting two days, started on Sunday. Russia is participating through a team headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The acronym BRICS refers to the founding five countries of the group: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Since the previous year, the group has grown, now including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Indonesia as full-fledged members.
